Durable Medical Equipment Q & A

What is durable medical equipment?

Durable medical equipment (DME) is any type of medical equipment that requires a doctor’s prescription. If you suffer an injury or live with a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis, you might benefit from DME.

In addition to helping alleviate pain, all durable medical equipment:

  • Can withstand repeated use
  • Is used for a medical reason
  • Isn’t useful for healthy individuals
  • Has an expected lifespan of at least three years

You use DME at home instead of at the doctor’s office or with your physical therapist.

What types of durable medical equipment do you offer?

At Premier Chiropractic and Sports Injury Center, the team offers a full array of durable medical equipment, including:

IntelliSkin

IntelliSkin apparel uses patented PostureCue™ technology to act as your “second skin.” When you wear IntelliSkin clothing, your body naturally improves its posture and alignment. IntelliSkin uses smart compression technology to help create a constant flow of information from the nerve receptors in your skin to your brain.

The team at Premier Chiropractic and Sports Injury Center regularly use IntelliSkin to ease pain and inflammation caused by poor posture and other musculoskeletal problems.

Braces

Braces are medical appliances used to enhance joint stability and to reduce pressure and swelling. Braces can also increase your confidence, making it easier to perform everyday tasks such as taking the dog for a walk, running errands, or climbing a flight of stairs.

If you suffer from joint pain as a result of arthritis or another type of injury, you may benefit from using a brace.

Crutches

Crutches are a type of durable medical equipment used to treat lower-body injuries. For example, if you sprain your ankle, break your foot, or undergo knee surgery, your doctor might recommend crutches to enhance mobility and encourage healing.

There are many different types of crutches. The type you’ll most benefit from depends on the nature and severity of your injury.

Knee walkers

A knee walker is a medical device used as an alternative to crutches. Also known as leg caddies, knee walkers promote increased mobility and don’t require you to stick anything under your arms. Ultimately, knee walkers allow for greater mobility and increased comfort.

What type of durable medical equipment is right for me?

The team at Premier Chiropractic and Sports Injury Center helps you determine the type of durable medical equipment you’ll most benefit from. Following a physical exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your goals for treatment,  your provider makes recommendations that align with your unique needs.
